Mindfulness is bringing attention to the present moment without judgement. In mindfulness we learn the skill of paying attention to the present moment just as it is.

Mindfulness allows us to focus on the present moment rather than going into auto pilot mode. It can be useful to think of it in stages:

  • Taping into the physical body and how it is connecting with the floor or seat
  • Achieving awareness by noticing how we feel
  • Being with the feeling(s) we have noticed and creating space
  • Using the space to choose what to do rather than acting on autopilot

A variety of means can be used to help including breathing practices, meditation, visualisation, body awareness, movement and cognitive exercises.

There is a wealth of evidence that supports the benefits of mindfulness, which include:

  • Strengthening cognitive control and ability
  • Improved working memory
  • Reducing anxiety
  • Building resilience
  • Reducing stress
  • Improved moods
  • Improving awareness of the body
